If at first you don't succeed...

This past week was difficult and frustrating. I was exhausted and my running was less than stellar. On Tuesday, Jan. 15th, I tried to go to the gym to run 5 miles on the treadmill. I got through 1.75 miles!!! I realized that the reason we have tapering weeks (weeks where you cut down on your mileage) is to let your body heal. I've been pushing past my limit and I think my body is rebelling. I am trying to learn to listen to my body. I need to sleep more. I need to eat when I'm hungry. I need to take days off when my muscles hurt. These things will allow me to continue training and run this marathon.

I treated myself to a massage this past Friday. What a difference that makes.....I ran 9.77 miles on Saturday.

Let's see what this week brings....

you're right about taking needed rest and not overdoing it. a great example of this for me was in cross country in high school. i gave myself stress induced hip fractures and they forced me to stop running for 3 weeks to rest and heal. my first day back on the team, not only was i full of much needed energy but i ran my longest and fastest up to that point that day. rest allows us to reset the injury and energy clock. plus it makes you really really miss running!!

keep up the good work and if your body is making you stop at 1.75 miles then listen to it. i know how frustrating it can be to do so little when you're capable of so much more but it won't reduce your endurance or abilities at all. it will actually allow you to keep increasing them.

yay marcy!!
